A Summer's End - Hong Kong 1986

2020

A Summer’s End - Hong Kong 1986 is a visual novel game inspired by Hong Kong cinema. Follow the story of Michelle and Sam, and how their chance meeting evolves into a deeper romantic relationship. Set in vibrant Hong Kong in the year 1986, it is an original story about love, family, and culture. Contains unique character dialogue that can branch into two unique endings, a point-based system to unlock bonus scenes, original vaporwave and 80s inspired soundtrack, and over 400 original and unique hand-drawn art inspired by 80s anime and media.

- The game highlights a unique LGBTQ narrative between two Asian women from a prominent historical time and place – Meeting the Queer You criteria

- The game is set in 1986, a year after the treaty was signed that triggered “the handover” of Hong Kong between the United Kingdom and China. This context underpins the narrative and the growing uncertainty of cultural identity runs parallel with the character’s sexual identity.

- The game developer’s, Oracle and Bone, website has a blog with resources that go into detail about their research and about LGBTQ history in Chinese culture and Hong Kong.
