Night in the Woods
2017
Night in the Woods is an indie adventure game that follows college dropout Mae Borowski and her return to her hometown. But things aren't the same. Home seems different now and her friends have grown and changed. Leaves are falling and the wind is growing colder. Strange things are happening as the light fades. The game is focused on exploration, story, and character with a cast of dozens of diverse characters to meet and lots to do across a lush, vibrant world.
- Players are able to construct the sexuality expression of the protagonist with narrative choices to reflect the players own sexuality expression – Meeting the Queer Me criteria.
- Mae is written as a very relatable depressed millennial coming to terms with their life and identity. Depending on player choice, Mae can confess that she had a crush on a girl at college and later players can choose to flirt with another young woman.
- Mental health is a core theme of the game. The nuances of depression, anxiety and dissociative disorder is represented and explored in a way that normalises what is often stigmatised.
- Multiple characters are LGBTQ+. Mae's closest friends are in an openly queer relationship. The environment is a rural small town and queer relationships in this context is explored – One couple expresses some resentment for how some act “small town polite” which is reflective of very real and lived experiences by many.
